EmpowerNet California, a new Bay Area non-profit organization, wants to open the doors for everyone to get technical training for future jobs. CEO, Joe McKinley brings some specialized experience to the table from his experiences as the Director of Training at The Stride Center, an organization responsible for training and preparing more than1,300 men and women for technical jobs since 2000. EmpowerNet programs are designed to assist extremely low income adults with barriers to employment.
McKinley says Careers in the IT field are ideal for entry level workers because provide access to careers that offer growth. “One can get excellent entry level pay and receive industry standard credentials and technical certifications.
EmpowerNet offers a range of services from simple access to free web-based tools such as curriculum and instruction manuals to access to fully advanced training programs conducted by authorized partner organizations.
EmpowerNet’s wants to help other communities launch IT training programs teaching students to learn how to repair computers and get employment as support technicians. By partnering with the OCCUR organization the Stride Center has been teaching A+ computer repair classes since 2009 with 50 graduates from the program now located at the Eastmont Technology Center. McKinley said EmpowerNet will reach hundreds more people in California over the next 18 months.
Bryan Lancaster, a graduate of OCCUR’S Eastmont Technology Center is an example of the impact that EmpowerNet’s program. Bryan, who is now employed at Milestone Technologies, says “I have done a variety of jobs from deployment of desktops, servers, inventory and desktop support”.

The Stride Center is currently taking applications at all Bay Area locations for classes starting in January including San Pablo at 2300 El Portal Drive, The Eastmont Technology Center in Oakland at 6948 Foothill Blvd. and 1212 Broadway, suite 400, in downtown Oakland at the BART station.
