Richmond Office of Neighborhood Safety Director DeVone Boggan was honored this year as a 2011 “Bay Area Achiever” by the National Forum for Black Public Administrators (NFBPA), a nonprofit organization with members in more than 350 areas nationwide.
Each year, NFBPA gives awards to African American officials “who have made meaningful contributions in the public sector for the overall good of the community and who exemplify positive role models for young people from all backgrounds.”
“Receiving the 2011 NFBPA Bay Area Achiever Young Public Administrator Award is a mark of distinction of which I am genuinely grateful,” Boggan said. “NFBPA is the nation’s premier association of Black public leadership and to be recognized this way by such a distinguished organization and powerful network of public leadership is truly overwhelming.”
Boggan has served as the Neighborhood Safety Director since 2007. In that position, he is responsible for guiding the city’s efforts  to provide and coordinate intervention services to  those identified as most likely to be perpetrators of gun violence.
Under his leadership, the office has created real alternatives to gun violence by ensuring greater accessibility and connectivity to culturally competent human, social and economic service opportunities to young men caught up in this public health crisis.
