Toastmasters clubs from around the world each year conduct both International and Table Topics Speech contests. During the month of February, Oakland ARPB Toastmasters Club 8933 will hold its annual Club Speech Contests and Open House.
Oakland Toastmasters Hold Contests, Open House
Both events are free and open to the public. All events will be held at the Downtown Oakland Senior Center, 200 Grand Ave. at Harrison, at 5:30 p.m. Winners will compete against other clubs in their local area. The Table Topics contest will be held Wednesday, Feb. 15. This contest allows members to demonstrate their off-the-cuff speaking skills. Each contestant has two minutes to answer the same question that is posed to them, without any advance preparation. The best respondent advances to the next level to compete against other clubs in the area. The ARPB International Speech Contest will be held Wednesday, Feb. 29 . “The International Speech Contest is the premier showcase featuring the combined skills that each member has developed as part of their completion of the basic Toastmasters projects,” said ARPB Toastmasters Vice President and contest chairman Karen Davis, CC. Most International speeches reflect inspirational themes but must adhere to published standards, including timing, voice, gestures and topic relevance. Club contests are the beginning of a member’s journey toward International recognition for his or her speaking skills. Each month from February through August, winners advance to compete at the next level. The final competition is held in August at the Toastmasters International Convention, where the regional winners from around the world meet. The winner of the final contest is crowned World Champion of Public Speaking. To coincide with the International Speech Contests, ARPB Toastmasters will also be having an open house, on Wednesday, Feb. 29. Perspective members are invited to attend this meeting to learn more about how Toastmasters can help them improve their communication and leadership skills. Any questions on Toastmasters will be answered by current members at the Open House. Please RSVP at (510) 832-2628 ext 230.
