The Multi-Ethnic Sports Hall of Fame and Everett & Jones hosted about 100 people at reception and book signing Feb. 16 for 1968 Olympian John Carlos at Everett & Jones in Oakland. Carlos signed his book, “The John Carlos Story,” which is in its second printing. The event was held as an Olympian Reunion in Oakland and 17 Olympians attended, including Ed Hicks, Steve Simmons, Ed Caruthers, George Carty, and Dawn Ellerbe. Carlos made history as one of the athletes who courageously raised their fists in a Black power salute at the 1968 Olympics. He is also a founding member of the Olympic Project for Human Rights (OPHR). Guests at the event had an opportunity and take photos and obtain autographs from Olympians who participated in the 1954, 1968 and Olympics. “This event was extremely exciting and the opportunity to meet these athletic giants was far more than I expected,” said one guest. To purchase John Carlos’ book, visit Marcus Book Store, 3900 Martin Luther King Jr Way, Oakland, CA 94609 or call (510) 652-2344.
