By Kia Croom NFL players Vernon and Vontae Davis are holding a scholarship fundraiser for fine arts students, 6 p.m., Saturday, March 31 at the Hamlin Mansion, 2120 Broadway in San Francisco. The event, organized by the Vernon and Vontae Davis Family Foundation, will support youth pursuing undergraduate degrees in fine arts; the A.R.T. Ambassador Youth Program, which provides life skills education to underserved children in the city’s Fillmore district; and the Children’s AIDS Art Programme, a South Africa-based nonprofit that provides art therapy to children with AIDS. As a child growing up in Washington, D.C., Vernon Davis developed an appreciation for art. “In my neighborhood you didn’t choose art, it was sports, basketball, football or being out on the streets selling drugs,” he said. “So I had to wait until I got to college before I felt free enough to explore my interests. I don’t want kids to go through that if it’s their passion.” The fundraiser, expected to draw 200 people, features performances by pianist Michael Blankenship and a Pas de Trois by French Dancer Caroline Rocher of Lines Ballet. Psalmist Leah Tysse of Glide Memorial Church will perform a spiritual selection, followed by a celebrity fashion show and live auction hosted by Big Spence of the film Money Ball. The auction – which can be accessed online – includes a four-day excursion with a Fisker Karma luxury vehicle, a one-year membership to Club One Fitness Center and a one-hour private flight for three over the Bay Area. The Vernon and Vontae Davis Family Foundation is a nonprofit established by the Davis brothers to support groups that help chemically addicted parents, arts programming in underserved communities and agencies that promote healthy living.
