Northern Light School in Oakland is a place where children learn to honor Black History, Women’s History and the multicultural roots of its students all year long. The keynote speaker at the school’s Black History celebration  in February was cardiac surgeon Dr. Coyness L. Ennix, who has been recognized for his public service with an Honorary National Fellowship from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Started by a handful of teachers in 1989, the private school serves preschool through eighth grade children from “traditional as well as alternative families,” from all socioeconomic levels, various cultures, and differing academic abilities, in order to create a school that reflects the real world. The school – headed by co-principals Michelle Lewis and Kaamil Bey Isles – is located at 3710 Dorisa Ave. near the Knowland Park in the Oakland hills. Isles, a native of Alameda, has over eight years of experience working in both fields of education and business.  She graduated from   Spelman College with a full scholarship based on academic excellence in mathematics – the NASA Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Scholarship. She has been  a co-principal at Northern Light School since the summer of 2010. Lewis is one of the original founders of Northern Light. For the past 23 years, she has worked to ensure every child at the school is able to follow their dream and make a difference in the world. Cornell Maier, retired Kaiser CEO, has steadfastly helped to donate and raise more than half of the school’s annual operating budget. which assists the school’s multicultural student body.
