Assemblymember Jared Huffman (D-San Rafael) has presented a 2012 Woman of the Year Award to Bay Area newscaster Dana King. “I am extremely honored to present this award to Dana King,” said Huffman. “Her career as a television journalist who has drawn public attention towards wars, natural disasters and crises around the world and then mobilizes support to help those affected is remarkable. “I also want to applaud her volunteerism and community spirit in speaking out for needy children through her leadership of MarinKids to ensure they have access to comprehensive health care, nutritious food, and quality education.” During the March 26 Woman of the Year celebration on the Assembly Floor, King was acknowledged for her accomplishments and service to Californians. At this annual event, sponsored by the California Legislative Women’s Caucus, a woman from each Assembly District is selected by individual assembly members to receive recognition for accomplishments and service. King, a Marin County resident, is a newscaster whose stories have highlighted injustices locally and around the globe. As chair of MarinKids, she uses her talents as an artist and reporter to support causes critical to children and the community. “I am humbled to be singled out for this award,” King said. “There are so many who give until it hurts, and they quietly work to make change in our community, for there is great need. They inspire me when I am discouraged.” Huffman represents the 6th Assembly District, which encompasses southern Sonoma County and all of Marin County.
