Global Ministry Presents Oleta Adams in Concert

Oleta Adams

Allen Temple Baptist Church’s Global Ministry and the Music, Cultural and Performing Arts Ministry are presenting a fundraising concert, “An Evening with Oleta Adams,” as part of the church’s ongoing outreach in Oakland to raise consciousness of the work to be done within   local communities and globally. Adams has inspired a growing legion of fans in the U.S. and Europe with journeys of the heart through songs that draw deeply from her roots in gospel. She will sing songs that have become favorites of many. Adams achieved worldwide acclaim with her 1990 rendition of singer and songwriter Brenda Russell’s “Get Here.” Bay Area native Miranda Wilson, a KKSF jazz radio personality for the last 15 years, will be the host. Proceeds from the concert will help preschool children and HIV/AIDS infected infants and purchase educational supplies for the W.W. Brown Nursery School in Soweto, South Africa, while financing needed renovations to the nursery school building. Last year, the Allen Temple ministry financed the construction of a fence and other renovations. Encouraging multicultural relations, the ministry took youth last year from East Oakland to South Africa for a nine-day trip. They interacted with children at a nursery and orphanage, bringing them school supplies, clothing and financial support for food and other necessities. Jordan Perteet, 15, had a chance to go South Africa. He said the experience touched him, filling a hole he never knew existed until he visited the motherland. “Looking out my hotel window, I could see the shanty towns and kept thinking, ‘Wow, this is Africa.’  The more we bonded with music, the more we spent time praising the Lord together, the more being there felt like home. It was hard to leave,” he said. Allen Temple has also sent funds to Haiti, Ethiopia and Japan to help with famine and disaster relief. The church, organized in 1919, organizes holistic ministries to address the needs of the whole person as well as the whole community. The public is invited to support the work of Allen Temple’s ministries though “An Evening with Oleta Adams,” 7 p.m., Saturday, May 12 at Allen Temple Baptist Church, 8501 International Blvd. in Oakland. The cost is $25 for a regular donation and $50 for a patron. For information go to www.eventbrite.com or call (510) 544-3962 Contact Jesse Brooks at mrjessebrokksii@gmail.com or (510) 575-8245
