Sharon Taylor came to the OCCUR Eastmont Technology Center (ETC) just after completing a nine-month drug rehabilitation program. The friend who referred her to the program told her the center would provide the skills for continuing her education as well as pursuing her life and career goals.  Taylor went to the orientation and was accepted to ETC’s Digital Literacy Workforce program. Taylor recalls feeling “uninformed regarding the use and understanding of computers and technology.”  But she was determined to get her life together. Her determination produced great results in mastering Microsoft Word applications, digital communications, 50 wpm word processing and even gain confidence to help other students. Thanks to Taylor’s work at ETC, she is now training for a position as house manager at New Chance Ministries located in East Oakland, where she provides administrative support and client oversight. Her duties include daily operations assistance and weekly report preparation Taylor’s experience is just one of the success stories at ETC, founded by OCCUR in 1997 in response to a need to bridge the ever-widening gap in technology access, usage and computer literacy in the East Bay region. For over a decade ETC has provided the essential technical and training services to more than 400 users each week and is nationally recognized for its best practices due to its work supporting users of all ages, interests and ranges of need,  including seniors and the disabled. Taylor is very excited about her new job and credits ETC for not only for the upward mobility skill training, but also for building and restoring her self-esteem and confidence. “She has been able to improve her own life while helping other students realize their second chance”, said Betty Glen, ETC Instructor and Career Development Specialist.
