Runway Show Fuses Fashion and Art

By Ashley Chambers
San Franciscans are looking forward to  Fashion On The Square (FOTS), the largest runway show on the West Coast, which returns for its eighth year on Aug. 5 at the Intercontinental Hotel. Proceeds  from Fashion on the Square are donated to worthy charities. This year’s beneficiaries are the San Francisco Arts Commission (SFAC) and Inner City Youth Sports. The show is presented by Glass House Communications and UnSung Diva! Productions, an all –women production team that seeks to redefine fashion in the Bay Area. “We’ve been infusing fashion with arts, theatre, and dance,”  said the show’s founder and creative director Y’Anad Burrell. After featuring a dance performance by Alonzo King Lines Ballet in 2009, the production team is presenting Perceptions Dance Company at this year’s show. “We will be infusing dance in terms of ballet and also music from an orchestra standpoint, strings, violin, and live performance,” said Burrell. “The passion was to make sure there was more diversity in fashion and make this an event that’s really sought after.” This year’s fashion show presents adult, teen and child models who will rock the runway in fashions from Dark Garden, DSW, Banana Republic, Old Navy, Keneuoe, Randy Rowden and Charmosa swimwear. The lineup will also feature fashions by student designers from San Francisco State University. Joseph Domingo, couture designer and recipient of the Fashion on the Square 2012 Fashion Designer of the Year Award, will showcase his collection. With celebrity clients such as international artist Shakira and actress Rosalyn Sanchez, Domingo has been a major force in the fashion industry since his debut at the Los Angeles Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in Fall 2006. Hosted by radio personality Sterling James, the fashion show starts at 6:30 p.m. at the Intercontinental Hotel, 888 Howard St. in San Francisco. An after-party will include a DJ, live performance and runway fashion show of LOVE by Janelle Cardenas. To purchase tickets and for information, visit
