Sugar Pie DeSanto, known as “Queen of the West Coast Blues,” and Sonny Rhodes, ”king of the lap steel guitar,” will be receiving lifetime achievement awards at this year’s Marin City Blues Jazz & Soul Party in the Park” on Monday, Sept. 3. Along with Sugar Pie and Rhodes, featured performers include the Marin School of the Arts, a high school jazz & blues band, Maestro JT & Afro-Rhythm, John Lee Hooker, Jr., Andre Thierry & Zydeco Magic and the Zydeco Boys, ages 4-7  and headliner Pete Escovedo Latin Jazz Orchestra. Also starring at the festival will be Zakiyah Hooker, Lara Johnston and Margie Turner with the California Red All Star Blues Band featuring Arsene St. Mary III, Bobbie Webb, Bernard Anderson, Jeff Minnieweather, Kevin Burton, Steve Gannon, Carlos Zialcita, Willie Riser, with guest harmonica player 13 year Vinnie Flores. Sugar Pie will receive the lifetime achievement award in recognition of her success as a first-class blues and soul singer, a commanding jazz stylist, an uproarious comedienne, a show-stopping dancer and an expert tunesmith. Among her recordings as an artist and writer are, “Slip in Mules,” “Use What You Got,” “Soulful Dress” and “I Don’t Wanna Fuss.” Over the years, she toured with James Brown, was the darling of Italy’s Porreta Soul Festival in 2006 and 2008 and received the Pioneer Award from the Rhythm and Blues Foundation. She has a new CD in production and has written over 100 songs throughout her career, The other award winner, Sonny Rhodes, is a living legend.  He has played at numerous festivals, including the San Francisco Blues Festival and Italy’s Musicamdo Jazz & Blues Festival. In 2011 and 2012, he won W.C. Handy Awards, now known as the Blues Music Awards presented by the Blues Foundation in Memphis, Tennessee. He was born in Smithville, Texas and received his first guitar at the age of eight as a Christmas present. Among his recordings are,  “I’ll Never Let You Go When Something Is Wrong,” “I Don’t Love You No More” and “Cigarette Blues.” The 15th annual Marin City Blues, Jazz & Soul Party in the Park will be held from noon to 7 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 3 at 100 Drake Ave. in Marin City.
