Girls Incorporated of West Contra Cost is holding an event to promote the third season of its College Bound Girls program, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 22.
The program is for girls between the ages of 14 and 17, who will attend monthly activities that include college campus tours, guest speakers presenting on SAT/ACT/CASHEE preparation, career day, community service events, leadership camping trips, social skill building opportunities and other resources that prepare them to be ready to apply to and enter college.
There are also scholarship and internship opportunities both within and outside of Girls Inc., which will be shared with the young women.
“Our goal is to empower these girls with confidence, knowledge and boldness to pursue their academic endeavors.” said Mieasha Harris, Executive Director.
“We show them how to defy the limitations set before them by stereotyped media images and negative statistics on achievements of girls by introducing options of starting a business, seeking internships in a potential career field, and taking on leadership roles in school and or their community,” she said.
September activities include a camping trip Sept. 14-Sept 16 at San Luis Reservoir; a SAT workshop starting Sept. 11; and screening of Half the Sky, which depicts the struggle of women and girls through media and economic literacy, Sept 12.
The Sept. 22 College Bound Girls meeting will be held at the Girls Inc. center, 260 Broadway in Richmond. There will also be an orientation for new members, 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 19 at the Girls Inc. center.
