Frank Davis Jr. 81, of Berkeley, California, died peacefully at home on September 26, 2012, surrounded by family and friends.

He was born March 6, 1931 in Vicksburg, MS, the son of the late Frank Sr. and Alice L. (January) Davis. He was the elder of their only two children and was preceded in His grace by his brother, Percy Davis.
He graduated from Berkeley High School in 1949 and went on to earn an Associate of Arts degree from San Francisco City College in 1951. Thereafter Frank enlisted into the US Air Force in June 1951. He served four years working as an Electronic Logistics Specialist achieving the rank of S/Sgt, attended the University of Maryland, College Park in 1952 while assigned to Bolling AFB and was stationed at several other bases in the mainland US as well as Hawaii. After his discharge in 1955, he returned to Berkeley and was hired as an Electronic Logistics Specialist at the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard. He also attended San Francisco State University from 1955-56. While at the shipyard, Frank obtained his real estate broker’s license and at the age of 35, he developed, built and occupied the apartment complex he resided in until his passing. In 1972 Frank left his job at the shipyard and embarked upon a career as a entrepreneur, community activist and political organizer. Over the next several decades Frank owned an electronics logistics supply store, a seafood market and restaurant and purchased many other residential properties. He was actively involved in the community and served in a leadership capacity in many civic organizations, job development initiatives and political campaigns, most notably the Gateway Project, South Berkeley Child Development Agency, several City of Berkeley Commissions, and was co-founder of both the Berkeley Black Property Owners Association and the Sacramento-Ashby Improvement Corporation (SAIC).
He was formerly married to Belva Melton and Carole Kennerly and is survived by a daughter, Darolyn Davis (David Wilkins) of Oakland, CA; three sons; Steven Davis of Oakland, CA; Frank Gillison (Debbie) of Colorado Springs, CO; Michael Davis of Dallas, TX; a nephew, Christopher Davis of Berkeley, CA; five grandchildren; Dava, Sterling, Adam, Alanah and Samantha; two grandnieces Mya and Brianna; sister-in-law Ruby Davis, cousins Ursalyn McHenry, June Johnson and Vivien Vaughters and a host of other relatives, extended family.
