Safeway has opened a new,  state-of-the-art 45,000-square-foot store in Berkeley. The Berkeley store at 1444 Shattuck Place, which replaces a smaller Safeway, will incorporate the company’s Lifestyle concept, which highlights expanded departments such as Bakery, Pharmacy, Floral, Deli, Produce, Full-Service Meat and Seafood departments, as well as a wide range of organic foods. In addition, the new facility offers customers a more convenient parking garage and an expanded Starbucks. A charitable contribition was prsented to the Berkeley Public Education Foundation for its work in the community. The foundation  supports programs to enhance educational opportunities in Berkeley’s public schools. Safeway is partnering with AC Transit’s EasyPass program to offer the store’s employees unlimited access to AC Transit’s service as a free benefit. The goal is to encourage employees to utilize public transportation, which provides commuter cost savings and helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles.
