Richmond’s Texanita Bluitt to Be Honored at BWOPA Awards

The Black Women Organized for Political Action – Political Action Committee  (BWOPA PAC) is hosting its annual Ella Hill Hutch Awards ceremony, honoring seven women and one man from throughout California for their community leadership and activism. The event will take place 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 3 at Skates by the Bay, 100 Seawall, Berkeley Marina in Berkeley. The state award-winners are San Leandro attorney Jayne Williams and Judge Trina Thompson. Chapter Honorees include Karen Anderson, Oakland/Berkeley; Texanita Bluitt, Richmond/Contra Costa County; Dr. Veronica Hunnicutt, San Francisco/Peninsula;  Aisha Knowles, Hayward/South County; and  Muriel Sykes, Fresno/Joaquin Valley County. William “Bill” Patterson, an Oakland NAACP leader and East Bay Municipal Utility District director, will be recognized as the man of the year. Ella Hill Hutch, the first African-American woman elected official to serve the greater Bay Area in the late 1970s, worked for the underprivileged, under-served and was particularly concerned about the systemic disadvantages of African-American women.
