Dr. E.N. Crawford
Raised in Oakland, Dr. E.N. Crawford accepted Christ at the age of 13.
He acknowledged his call to the Gospel ministry in 1973, making him the youngest preacher in the California State Baptist Convention.
Crawford took on an active role as part of the ministerial staff at the Union Baptist Church, where he became involved with local associations, state and national conventions and the East Bay Baptist Association.
In 1985, he organized the Praises of Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Oakland.
Under his pastorate, the church acquired many new properties. On Feb. 3 Praises of Zion marched into their new location in San Leandro, becoming the first African American Baptist congregation to purchase its own property in the history of San Leandro.
Under Crawford’s leadership, Praises of Zion works with community programs including the Monastery Childcare Center, Building Future with Women and Children, a food pantry lunch program, Mens of Excellence Ministry and an after school program in the San Leandro Unified School District.
The church’s ministries have expanded to include Survival Kit classes, counseling, marriage and family focus, radio and TV broadcasts, an annual women’s conference, the “Joyful Word” telephone outreach, and others.
Crawford attended JFK University College of Law, served in numerous organizations, and served as president of the California State Baptist Youth & Young Adult Convention.
He will celebrate 40 years of preaching the gospel and the church’s new location on March 3, 10, 17, and 24 at 3 p.m. at Praises of Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 1395 Bancroft Ave. in San Leandro. For more information, call (510) 483-1811.
