Math Streaming at St. Andrew School Helps Bridge the Gap

By Ashley Chambers Students across the nation can boost their math and science scores from the comfort of their computer screens by tuning in to live stream sessions conducted by Rev. Robert Lacy Jr. of St. Andrew Private School in Oakland. As a teacher of math and science for the past 15 years, Lacy says he is reaching students where they are through the channel of multimedia, “After school programs are closing down. They’re being cut because of funding. So we decided to continue our after school program on a larger scale,” said Lacy. “A lot of students have internet access. So why not make their homework help accessible to them in a language they can understand.” According to Ed-Data, there are a lot of students in Oakland who need the extra help. Only 44 percent of 10th graders in Oakland public schools score at a proficient level on the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) in math, compared to 58 percent at the state level. Lacy uses the school’s “large library of math information, from basic arithmetic to calculus” to help bridge the gap between proficient and below average student performance. He provides an intense focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) subjects. “I’m able to tap into all of those resources without any interference and expose them to any student of any nationality, any age who needs it. It’s as simple as sending me a question on the quadratic formula or on graphing fractions, as well as life science and chemistry,” he said. “Seventh and eighth grade math are usually where problems start, and when algebra lands, it becomes more blurry for many,” he said. “ However, I am confident that if you can read instructions, you can do math problems.” Live math and science streaming sessions are open to all grade levels aiming to develop students to be competent and literate at their level in math and science, raise their test scores, and focus on passing the exit exam. To get help with math and science questions, students and parents can log onto www.ustreamtv.com/channel/standrewchurch Monday through Friday from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. Lacy welcomes other churches to encourage their students to tune in.
