Mayor Stephen Cassidy
The City of San Leandro is receiving help from the Oakland A’s and PG&E to renovate a baseball field at Stenzel Park used by the Washington Manor Baseball Little League.
Mayor Stephen Cassidy expressed his appreciation for the grant.
“Generations of San Leandro children have grown up playing baseball in our parks, having a fun, positive experience, making new friends, and learning life-long lessons in teamwork and fair play,” he said. “We are grateful … for their support in keeping our playing fields in top condition.”
“This is a great gift and opportunity for the community,” stated Carolyn Knudtson, San Leandro’s Recreation and Human Services Director.
The improvements to the number 2 baseball field at Stenzel Park will include irrigation renovations, addition of 2-inch Candlestick Mix to the infield area, rebuilding the pitcher and bullpen mounds, new sod for the infield, new home plate bases and a new windscreen for the team areas.
The work will be completed by the Good Tidings organization over the next few weeks. After completion, the field will remain closed for approximately 6 weeks to allow the new sod to take. The cost of the project is estimated at $21,000.
Four baseball fields are located at Stenzel Park, which is on Wicks Boulevard, across from the Marina Community Center.
