Marin City had its first comedy show “Comedy Explosion” last Friday night, May 17. The audience enjoyed the show at the Manzanita Senior Center, organized by Eboni McKinley. Event Director for Adults and Young Adults for the Marin City Community Service District, McKinley says the show was a success as more than 200 people from the community came together to enjoy a night of comedy.
Performing comedians included Samatha Carter-Griffin a.k.a. ‘Wondinka,’ also the MC for the night, Reggie Murray a.k.a. ‘Murrific,’ Kevin Douglas a.k.a. ‘Tight Nutts,’ and Shawna Allen-Brown a.k.a. ‘Blackberry.’ Ricky Hill a.k.a. rapper ‘SG’ also performed. During intermission, the show became a dance party with DJ Wayne Price.
Shea Suga, a professional comedian who performs in the Bay Area, headlined the show, doing a routine about her massage from an African masseuse.
A hair stylist and make-up artist for the past 20 years, Suga got into comedy by coincidence. After being encouraged by her family and friends to do comedy, one of her barber friends finally called on her to do an open mike. For Suga, that first time on the mike in May 2005 was her best show. She enjoyed the experience and has been doing comedy ever since.
Suga also enjoyed performing at last week’s Comedy Explosion, writing on her Facebook: “So much love in Marin City tonight. They want me back already…All thanks to God and all of you with that good energy of love for me!!!” Visit her page at www.facebook.com/SheaSuga.
McKinley says she is looking forward to organizing another comedy show.
