Oakland native Adrian Marcel has established a growing fan base locally and nationally with the recent release of his EP debut Rafael Present’s 7 Days of Weak.
Protégé to the legendary Rafael Saadiq, Marcel signed a record deal with El Seven Recordings/Universal Republic over a year ago and has since been living between Oakland and Atlanta recording the EP and other material soon to be released.
This weekend marks Marcel’s homecoming where fans will have the opportunity to meet the artist and celebrate his success.
He will be hosting a meet and greet on Saturday, May 25 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Liege Spirits, 481 9th Street in Oakland. On Sunday, May 26, the artist will make his first Bay Area performance at Yoshi’s SF at 10 p.m., 1330 Fillmore in San Francisco.
“It was important to me to share this moment with my city,” Marcel said.
“My mix tape is an offering, it doesn’t cost anyone anything. Oakland sets the bar for cool, so I knew if my city loved it, then the whole world will love it,” he said.
7 Days of Weak is in a category of its own. The mixtape captures listeners with subdued yet mellow beats—a nice pairing with Marcel’s melodic voice and swagged urban appeal.
Singles “Caught up,” “I’m still” and “Don’t Disturb this Groove” each possess a true R&B sound reminiscent of classic tracks from Curtis Mayfield’s Super Fly album.
With an endorsement from Rafael Saadiq and support of local tastemakers like Dope Only! Marcel is destined for success.
