Olsen & Partners Donates $20,000 for Haiti Scholarships

Olsen & Partners, CPA presented a surprise donation of $20,000 to Hope for Haiti: Education at St. Columba Catholic Church’s third annual “Haiti Cultural Celebration to provide scholarships to almost 100 impoverished children in Port-au-Prince, Haiti’s capital city. Hope for Haiti: Education was organized by the parishioners at St. Columba in 2010.  The nonprofit program supports children to attend four schools in the Grand Ravine neighborhood. They work in conjunction with the Community Human Rights Council of Grand Ravine (CHRC-GR), an interfaith, non-violent and non-partisan group. CHRC-GR selects students from a pool of severely impoverished children who otherwise couldn’t afford to attend school, exposing them to being drawn into street life, servitude or sex trafficking. The scholarship covers tuition for kindergarten, elementary or grade school and a full set of school supplies, including a uniform, backpack, books and pencils. St. Columba’s “Haiti Cultural Celebration” fundraiser on May 18 featured a traditional Haitian dinner of goat, chicken, rice, peas and plantains.  Guests enjoyed dancing, music and drumming performed by Afoutayi Dance, Music & Arts Co., and had an opportunity to purchase handcrafted Haitian metal artwork. The organization also honored Jean-Ernest Point-du-Jour, the volunteer president of CHRC-GR and Haitian-based scholarship manager, for his work with the program. “We are so thankful for Olsen & Partners’ staff, clients, friends and families,” said Tom Luce, St. Columba’s Haitian liaison.  “The $20,000 donation is overwhelming and will help provide a better life for almost 100 hopeful Haitian children.” “I was born in Haiti and am so pleased to help make a full year of school possible for Haitian children,” said Gina Waota, the firm’s managing partner.  “The generosity of everyone in the Olsen & Partners network is a true blessing.” Donations of any amount are welcome.  Donations are tax deductible and directed to the scholarships program, which is managed entirely by volunteers.   Mail or drop off checks with “Haiti Committee” in the memo line to St. Columba Church at 6401 San Pablo Ave., in Oakland, CA 94608.
