Assemblymember Nancy Skinner (D-Berkeley) has named El Sobrante resident Senior Airman Joseph Camacho as the 15th Assembly District’s Veteran of the Year. Camacho served in the United States Air Force from 2001 to 2005 as a Computer and Communications Systems Specialist. For his service, he was awarded both the Airman of the Month and Airman of the Quarter. “Joseph Camacho serves as a shining example of someone who continually strives to serve his country, both abroad and at home,” Skinner said. Most recently, Camacho worked with Skinner to speak about the importance of provisions to help reduce the backlog of veterans’ benefits claims that were included in the state budget sent to Governor Brown this month. Since 2011, he has served on the Board of Directors for Their Angels: Military Support Group, a non-profit organization that assists both those in military service and family members affected by those on active duty. The organization has delivered over 28,000 care packages. After returning home from the military, he re-enrolled in Contra Costa College, where he founded an on-campus group to support and advocate for student veterans. He graduated from San Francisco State University with degrees in political science and history In 2011, Camacho was named a San Pablo Koshland Fellow and is helping the San Francisco Foundation distribute $300,000 worth of funds throughout the San Pablo community. This year, Camacho was appointed to the El Sobrante Municipal Advisory Council.
