Oakland, CA – It was deja vu all over again, game five, Justin Verlander and the win. Last year on October 11, 2012 Verlander pitched the Tigers to the American League Championship Series with a win over the A’s. A year ago to the day, he did it again.
Detroit advances to the ALCS once again by shutting out Oakland 3-0. Many expected to see another pitcher’s duel just like in game 2 but the veteran captivated the game, knocking out the A’s for the second straight postseason.
Last year, Verlander fanned 11 and allowed four hits in a complete game. Tonight he struck out 10 and didn’t allow a hit until the seventh inning. He finished with eight frames and walked one. Sonny Gray on the other hand didn’t have the same type of performance five days ago but he pitched well. Just not well enough to win.
