Good Samaritan Missionary Baptist Church will be holding its annual Christmas Basket Give-A-Way Monday, Dec. 16 providing groceries for up to 100 families.
The church hopes to provide enough food to last up to a week for families in need. To be eligible for a basket, families were required to sign up and provide photo identification and proof of residence.
Started in 1958, Good Samaritan is dedicated to helping the community of Vallejo and surrounding areas through their community outreach programs. They offer a free community Thanksgiving dinner serving an average of 600 people each year. The church sponsors a monthly clothing and food giveaway every third Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
They have also partnered with Christian Help Center in providing emergency food assistance twice a month.
Good Samaritan has a rich history, holding their first worship services at the Veterans Memorial Building before purchasing property from the Vallejo Unified School District in 1958. They moved to their current location in 1967.
Under the leadership of Pastor Marvin D. Slade since 1980, the church has expanded its ministries to include the Brotherhood, Youth Steppers, Women in Action, and Young Adults. They hope to continue serving the community and welcome donations (tax-deductible) to assist with their outreach efforts.
