The Guardians of Youth Gala is presenting “A Night at the Oscars,” a fundraising dinner benefiting the Continentals of Omega Boys & Girls Club, which has been serving the youth of Vallejo for 48 years.

Those attending will enjoy a cocktail hour, silent auction with items such as autographed sports memorabilia and a special walk-on role in a holiday movie, dinner catered by Alex’s Catering, and live music from local band The Mavericks.

The club was founded by Philmore Graham, a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity after he took six young boys under his wing, mentoring them with life skills, field trips, and tutoring.

Expanding the project to support other young boys in the area, Graham and his wife JaMella provided everything – books, tutoring sessions, field trips, snacks, and lessons on proper etiquette and behavior – giving the boys an enriching experience.

Now, over 40 years later, the club is still a resource for young people in Vallejo, with a mission to “motivate youth to do their best in life.”

Serving over 500 young people, the club offers programs focused on academic success, good character, and healthy lifestyles.

This year, the club has expanded its focus with two new programs – nutrition and fitness and music.

“Our focus has always been academics, but this year we’re expanding,” said Executive Director Wendy Jones. “We have a nutrition instructor who’s here every day so kids get a hot meal. We’re planning to start our garden this summer, and we have a new music instructor teaching music and hip hop dance classes.”

“Our kids need the financial support,” she said.

Jones says the club is always looking for volunteers and donations to help with their programs.

“A Night at the Oscars” will celebrate the work of club and recognize recipients of the Philmore Graham Humanitarian Award and Jamella Nelson Graham Academic Excellence Award: Edison Kelly and Dr. Ramon Bishop.

Former club member Tiara Daniels and last year’s Philmore Graham Humanitarian Award recipient will present this year’s awards to Kelly and Bishop.

The event will be held on Friday, Jan. 24 at 6 p.m. at the Dan Foley Cultural Center, 1499 N. Camino Alto in Vallejo.
