The Oakland Raiders hosted a private screening for season ticket holders of the movie “Draft Day” Wednesday night at the Bay Street AMC movie theatre.
Raiders Latavius Murray, Nick Kasa, Taiwan Jones, Chimdi Chekwa, and Matt McGloin attended the screening and greeted fans.
“We want them to win this year,” said Sherri Morton, Oakland native and longtime Raider fan. “I already have my tailgate planned.”
And the need to win is the driving force in the movie, which stars Kevin Costner as Sonny Weaver, general manager of the Cleveland Browns. He trades for the number one pick and must quickly decide what he’s willing to sacrifice in pursuit of perfection.
Chadwick Boseman, star of the movie “41,” plays an NFL prospect, anxious, excited, and like so many young NFL prospects, concerned about when he would be picked and what team he would end up on.
“You don’t know where you’re going to end up,” said Murray, remembering the emotions he felt on Draft Day in 2013.
Taiwan Jones, a Bay Area native, reflected on going through a similar draft experience. Thinking he would be picked a lot earlier, he says he was very upset. When the calls kept showing up on his phone with a “510” Oakland area code, he did not immediately answer. But when he did, it was the Raiders.
“When I realized I was going to the Raiders, all the emotions and upset that I felt were completely gone,” said Jones. “I never thought I’d be playing in the Bay Area, my hometown.”
Currently, the Raiders have the overall 5th draft pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, and after seeing results of the acquisitions already made in the off season, fans are hoping the team makes a big move this year.
