Peralta Honors African American Scholarship Recipients

The Peralta Association of African American Affairs recently held its 16th annual scholarship reception.


With a record number of applicants, the association on May 2 recognized and awarded a total of $4,500 to nine African American students who attend Berkeley City College, College of Alameda, Laney College and Merritt College, who have demonstrated academic achievement, leadership skills and community service.

“It was a great evening to honor the academic achievements of our students,” said Dr. Herbert Kitchen, president of Peralta Association of African American Affairs.

“This year’s scholarship recipients have worked hard in school and are active members in the communities where they live and work,” he said. “Peralta faculty, staff and administrators are proud to acknowledge them all for a job well done and wish them much success as they leave the community college system for the UC’s and CSU’s and other higher educational institutions.”

Scholarship winners were: Berkeley City College – Robyn Walker, Troy Dotson and Theresa Ary; College of Alameda – 
Randi Elaine Stewart and Selma Adam; Laney College –
Erica Thompson and Eddie Heard; Merritt College –
Shalita Williams and Corey Spears.


Since 1998, the association has distributed over $65,000 in scholarships to Peralta students.
