“Receiving this grant for an unprecedented fifth consecutive year is a testament to the ingenuity, talent and hard work of our library staff,” he added.
The Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts, in partnership with Arts Midwest, designed to revitalize the role of literature in American culture and to encourage the public to read for pleasure and enlightenment. The program supports organizations across the country in developing community-wide programs that encourage reading and participation by diverse audiences.
Organizations selected to participate in The Big Read receive access to online training resources and opportunities, as well as educational and promotional materials designed to support widespread community involvement.
The book selection for 2015 is Into the Beautiful North, a novel by acclaimed author Luis Alberto Urrea, author of numerous works of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry.
In his third novel, Urrea transcends the “us against them” discourse of immigration and writes with compassion, complexity, and humor about the people and places caught up in the border wars. Filled with radiant depictions of the Mexican landscape and unforgettable characters, the novel chronicles a young woman’s quest to protect her hometown from banditos.
The 2015 Big Read will kick off in February 2015 and continue through the months of March and April. The community is invited to be active in the Big Read experience, which provides a wonderful journey of activities, events and insights.
