People United for a Better Life in Oakland (PUEBLO) held its 27th annual dinner last Saturday evening, celebrating the overwhelming victory in November of Measure LL, establishing a civilian police oversight commission, and honoring two dedicated activists who have committed so much to the organization and the community.

Gwen Hardy, who has been a PUEBLO member since 1989, presented awards to members Vildred Dawson, secretary treasurer, and Rashidah Grinage, past executive director, who chaired the coalition that passed Measure LL with 83 percent of the vote.

Dawson has worked as an employee of the Alameda County Social Services Agency for 35 years. A member of PUEBLO since 1993, she is committed to working to stop the community to prison pipeline.
