On Monday afternoon, a three-alarm fire engulfed the building of Zion’s First Church of God of Christ on 1451 8th St in Oakland. Local residents and church members looked on as firefighters worked to contain the blaze. The fire was reported at 2:48 p.m. and could be seen from trains at the nearby BART station.
Church member Trina Fagans said she was walking back to her home near 8th and Market St when she saw smoke.
“As I got closer, people were pointing to the smoke and said it was the church so I came running,” said Fagans. “It’s a shame because our church just celebrated their 96th anniversary in late August.”
