BAVC Offers Production Training for Media Makers

Bay Area Video Coalition (BAVC) is an organization that works to inspire social change by providing media artists with the education and technology to produce quality stories.

Located in San Francisco’s Mission District at 2727 Mariposa St., BAVC’s warehouse style headquarters is filled with recording studios, computer labs, TV production studio and even a preservation suite to save old video and audio recordings.

Whether it’s producing a live broadcast, recording audio for a music project, or brainstorming film ideas – with more than 37 years of experience in video and multimedia production education in the East Bay and in San Francisco – BAVC has the equipment and training capacity to help media makers take their career to the next level.

From Photoshop to Final Cut Pro, HTML and Web Coding to leveraging networking opportunities on LinkedIn, BAVC offers a plethora of media production courses.

In 2009, the San Francisco Department of Technology selected BAVC to operate and San Francisco’s Public Access TV (SF Commons), which broadcasts on Comcast channels 29 and 76. Non-profits, community organization, and independent media makers are given the opportunity to produce a recorded or live show for broadcast.

The organization has recently partnered with San Francisco’s Sherriff Department to go inside the jails and offer inmates the opportunity to participate in digital story telling workshops.

“We’re just allowing them to tell their story,” said Philip Jackson, community associate at BAVC.

Continuing BAVC’s mission of inspiring social change through media. Jackson says story telling projects are also in the works for veterans and the Homeless Prenatal Program, a program that provides education and care for homeless expecting mothers.

However, BAVC understands the future lies in the next generation of young media makers. Through its BRIDGE program, each year the organization accepts 80-100 people, ages 18-24, to provide their technological training but more importantly job readiness preparation.

Helping to secure paid internships and work on resume building is major focus of the program. BAVC is in its 3rd year of running the BRIDGE program

“It’s this age group that still needs a lot of help,” said Chris Runde, Youth Program’s Manager at BAVC.
