The California Milk Processor Board, creators of GOT MILK?, partnered with the Oakland Unified School District to execute the high school breakfast challenge in the area, encouraging students to start the day off right with a nutritious breakfast with dairy milk for better academic performance and overall health.

“Studies show that about a third of adolescents skip breakfast on a daily basis and one of the easiest ways to get an academic edge by starting the day off right with a healthy breakfast,” said Elizabeth Adams, Got Milk? Representative. “I’m proud of everyone that came together for this effort and made it a success.”

The $3,000 award was presented by Ralph Bunche High School Principal Betsye Steele and Representative Elizabeth Adams with over 50 students in attendance.

Since the beginning of the school year, Dewey, Rudsdale and Bunche High Schools went head-to-head in a three-week breakfast competition to see which school could increase breakfast participation the most within their districts. Bunche High School emerged victorious with an increase in breakfast consumption by 12%.

“It’s wonderful to see the progress the students have made,” said Principal Steele. “We’ve noticed a change in students behavior when they actually sit down and have a healthy breakfast.”
