Free Family Day at Vallejo Naval and Historical Museum

This Saturday is Family Free Day at the Vallejo Naval and Historical Museum, home to more than 35,000 historic photos of Vallejo and Mare Island.

The museum features five galleries of exhibits including the history of Vallejo, women’s contributions to the city, the Vallejo Sports Hall of Fame, and Mare Island and U.S. Navy history, located in the city’s old City Hall at 734 Marin St.

First a state capital, then home to railroads and a major naval installation, Vallejo’s growth is reflected in her building patterns. The city was named after General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo in 1850 and served as the state capital for two years.

In 1852, Mare Island became the first permanent U.S. Naval shipyard on the West Coast after Congress purchased it.

Families can learn this and more diverse history of the city on Saturday, Feb. 15, noon to 4 p.m. For more information, call (707) 643-0077 or visit
