Order of the Eastern Star Holds “Women Making a Difference” Tribute


Pamela H. Price, Grand Worthy Matron of the Golden State Grand Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, Prince Hall Rite of Adoption of California, has scheduled a special luncheon program to honor outstanding women of the community.

The event will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, April 26 at the Oakland Airport Hilton Hotel at 1 Hegenberger Rd., Building #4 in Oakland.

The Special Project Committee’s theme, “Women Making a Difference,” and the tribute will recognize the contributions of these women toward the well being of their communities.

The honorees are: Irma Anderson, former Mayor of Richmond; Rev. Sandra Blair, associate minister of St. Paul AME Church of Berkeley; Roma Groves, principal of Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School in Oakland; Daisy Hall, mental health counselor and health educator; Brenda Knight, founder of “Ladies in Red” and the first Black woman to serve as an elected official in Napa County;

Dr. Gloria Wade-Lesser, three-time survivor of breast cancer and founder of an African American organization for breast cancer survivors and patients; Janice Mirikitani, American Sansei poet, activist, second poet laureate for the city of San Francisco, and the wife of Rev. Cecil Williams; Olis Simmons, president and CEO of Youth Uprising, a community-based leadership program in Oakland;

Tracy Ward, director of the Family Resource Center at a YMCA in San Francisco and an executive director of a teen women’s program; and Angie Lewis-White, engineer in corporate America, who introduces science and engineering to youth.

The Golden State Grand Chapter contributes annually to numerous charities, including the City of Hope, Blood Bank, Breast Cancer Research, HIV-AIDS, Sickle Cell Anemia, Grand Parents as Second Parents, Battered Women, and the United Negro College Fund.

Bertha Paul is the chairperson of this year’s Special Project, assisted by Barbara Brooks, co-chairperson. The public is invited to attend this gala event. Donation is $45.
