The New Parkway’s ‘First Friday Shorts’ Showcases Student Films

The Media Enterprise Alliance at KDOL-TV will showcase student films from their video production workshop at “First Friday Shorts,” a free monthly screening of short films from local media arts community organizations held at The New Parkway Theater, 474 24TH Street, on First Fridays that highlights the diversity of perspectives and voices in the Bay Area.

“Our students have been learning the ropes of video production, editing, and animation all year,” said Jake Schoneker, Program Director at the Media Enterprise Alliance at KDOL-TV. “The films they’ve produced cover a variety of topics that relate to Oakland youth, such as food justice, internet addiction, and violence prevention. We’re proud to be showcasing our students’ amazing work on the big screen at the New Parkway!”

The Media Enterprise Alliance at KDOL-TV provides high school students in the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) the opportunity to study media arts with a focus on video production. Their after school program is completely free and is taken for academic credit within the OUSD.

Students acquire artistic and technical skills that give them a voice to affect social change within their community, while developing tools to satisfy requirements for college admission and successful job placement. MEA works to strengthen communities by helping retain youth in high school, enhance their arts and cultural experience, and afford students with video production technique that isn’t offered in normal classrooms.

While producing informational films for non-profits and features for a television news magazine, students are exposed first-hand to community problems and become an active part of the solutions.

MEA is an alliance of organizations in the East Bay, including a consortium of high schools within the Oakland Unified School District, a partnership with OUSD’s public-access television station, KDOL, and mentors drawn from faculty members and students from the Center for Young Entrepreneurs at Haas (YEAH) program at the Haas School of Business, and the UC-Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism.

The next viewing is scheduled for Friday, April 4th from 6-8pm at the New Parkway Theatre. For more information, visit
