The Richmond Art Center announces the opening of its Spring Exhibitions, including The Breakfast Group: Jive and Java, an exhibition featuring works by 30 noted painters, glass artists, sculptors, film-makers and photographers of the East Bay’s venerable “Breakfast Group.”
The Breakfast Group originated in the mid-’60s when art professors at UC Berkeley, including the American Constructivist sculptor and painter Sid Gordin, and pioneering member of the Bay Area Figurative Movement Elmer Bischoff, began meeting to talk about art.
“Bringing the ‘Breakfast Group: Jive and Java’ to the Richmond Art Center is more than just hanging art on the walls; it is about breaking bread, lifting a cup of coffee and opening up the conversation to neighbors, other artists and the kids down the street,” says Jan Wurm, a Berkeley artist who has been a part of this group for nine years. “That cup of java can fuel a lot of jive — enough to propel us through the week and return to the table for more the next week.”
“The Breakfast Group, like the Richmond Art Center, offers a community gathering space where people can meet to see and talk about art, creativity, life, the community and new ideas,” says Richard Ambrose, Executive Director of the Richmond Art Center. “We look forward to celebrating the artworks by this group of emerging and established Bay Area artists and having them occupy our gallery.”
During the course of the exhibition, members of the Breakfast Group will engage the public in a variety of activities, including their coffee-fueled ‘Jive and Java’ conversations (free) each Saturday from 11:00am to 1:00pm. In addition, a ‘Spotlight’ gallery will switch out weekly to showcase work of a featured artist who will lead an informal gallery tour and talk about their work as part of the ‘Jive and Java’ conversations. A series of $20 workshops are also planned to complement the exhibition.
“Saturdays are a great time to visit the Art Center this Spring, I hope you’ll join us and the artists for what’s sure to be a series of lively discussions,” says Ambrose.
The Breakfast Group: Jive and Java exhibit will run from March 22nd to May 30th at the Richmond Art Center, 2540 Barrett Avenue,. For more information, visit www.therac.org
