A leader of one of the largest and most militant labor unions in South Africa is speaking this week in the East Bay about how his union is calling on voters in his country not to support the African National Congress in this year’s elections.
Mphumzi Maqungo is treasurer of the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA), which is opposing the African National Congress-led Tripartite government, saying that it represents big business’s interests, especially the interests of U.S. and European-based banks and corporations.
The union is currently building a workers’ party and united front to lead the struggle against the capitalist onslaught of deregulation, privatization, and strike breaking.
