Northern Light School’s 8th Graders East Coast Excursion Tour

Northern Light School’s eighth grade class of 2014 recently returned from their East Coast Excursion Tour to New York City, Philadelphia, and Washington, DC.

This annual trip is a highlight of the eighth grade year at Northern Light School, and is a sixteen-year tradition since 1998 that is considered an important and life-changing experience.

This year’s class began fundraising for their excursion Summer 2013 with the ambition to be one of only three classes to make it to the Big Apple to see the Statue of Liberty. And they did just that.

Students were also able to visit the United Nations Headquarters and sit in on a UN Assembly meeting, tour the 9/11 Tribute Center and Ground Zero Memorial, and view New York City at night from the top of the Empire State Building.

The class was also able to attend a performance of the Tony Award-Winning musical, “Matilda” on Broadway.

The class then travelled to Philadelphia where they saw the Liberty Bell and visited Independence Hall where the US Constitution, Bill of Rights, and Declaration of Independence were written and signed. Although heavy rains plagued Philadelphia, the students raced to the top of the steps at the Museum of Art before travelling to Washington, D.C.

While at the Nation’s Capitol as their final destination, students visited the most significant monuments like the Lincoln Memorial, the White House, and the Ford’s Center but were also able to visit the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

A fun-filled dinner at Buca di Beppo with the school’s DC-based alums, followed by an exciting performance of “Shear Madness” at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts,
