Internment Camp Survivor Spoke at Richmond School Renaming Meeting

An 89-year old woman who was among the Japanese Americans sent to internment camps during World War II spoke at the West Contra Costa Unified School District Board of Education Committee on Renaming Portola Middle School Tuesday evening at Fairmont Elementary School in El Cerrito.

Mary Kamiya, who was 16 years old when she and her family were sent to an internment camp in Colorado, spoke to the committee evaluating a proposal to rename Portola Middle School after Fred T. Korematsu, the Japanese American civil rights icon who resisted internment orders during World War II.

This is the second of four meetings scheduled on the topic. Meetings will also be held on Thursday, June 26 at Harding Elementary School in El Cerrito and on Tuesday, July 1, at Stege Elementary School in Richmond. Both meetings will begin at 7 p.m
