Levi’s Stadium More Impressive Than Game

Santa Clara, CA – Levi’s Stadium wow’d the fans who attended their first NFL game at the new home of the Forty-Niners. However, the actual game wasn’t so great. In their second preseason game, the 49ers had little to nothing against the Denver Broncos as they were shut out 34-0.

Prior to the game many hoped to see what could’ve been a Super Bowl matchup from last year. But the reality is, it was just an exhibition game than meant nothing. Luckily for San Francisco their performance will not be marked in the books.

“Yeah, didn’t think we executed well enough in any areas today,” said 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh. “We’re not going to keep experimenting. We need to tighten this down fast.”

We have to clean things up,” Colin Kaepernick said. “We have too many mistakes.”

San Francisco struggled in all phases of the game. Colin Kaepernick went 5-for-39 yards in his two series. Phil Dawson missed two field goals, first a 55-yard attempt in the first quarter and again on a 44-yard attempt late in the first half. Kaepernick overthrew Brandon Lloyd in the end zone and the backup quarterbacks failed immensely.

Blaine Gabbert’s pass intended for Quinton Patton was intercepted by Tony Carter. The Broncos scored in one play and six seconds. Brock Osweiler found Cody Latimer for a 33-yard touchdown extending Denver’s lead 24-0. Josh Johnson came in after that and fumble the ball on his second snap.

“You can’t be discouraged,” said Vernon Davis. “It’s football, things happen. We’ve been in this position plenty of times before. You can’t just let this dictate what you’re doing later on.”

The 49ers have been outscored 57-3 through two exhibition games, including a 23-3 defeat in Baltimore on Aug 7. The defense performed poorly, providing no effort in containing Peyton Manning nor his offense. Safety Antoine Bethea left the game with a concussion early in the second quarter.

“Scoring points is the name of the game, and we haven’t done that,” Joe Staley said. “We’ve got a lot of work to do.
