Schroeder Hall captured the limelight this past weekend as its opening marked the newest chapter in the Green Music Center story.

Schroeder Hall is the 250-seat recital hall named after Schroeder, the piano-playing prodigy from the Charles Schulz’ cartoon strip, “Peanuts.”

Jean Schulz, the widow of Charles Schulz, is among the lead donors to the $9.5 million project located on the campus of Sonoma State University.

Dr. Ruben Armiñana, President of Sonoma State University, said, “Schroeder Hall is a space in which the arts can flourish, where education can thrive, where students can learn and our community can gather.”

The opening weekend program showcased an array of great musicians against the backdrop of the new hall: David Benoit, James David Christie, Jeffrey Kahane, and Ruth Ann Swenson, who highlighted the unique features of the hall and its ability to showcase a wide spectrum of talent.

“The point of the weekend is to experiment with all the different types of music that will be played here. That includes jazz, vocal music, organ music, a brass choir and more,” said Zarin Mehta Co-Executive Director, Green Music Center.

According to Dr. Brian Wilson, chair of the Department of Music at Sonoma State University, “I personally acknowledge Emeritus Professor Bob Worth, leader of Sonoma Bach, to whom Don and Maureen Green first reached out. The fruition of that friendship has benefitted this department forever and immeasurably.”

The centerpiece of Schroeder Hall is the Brombaugh Opus 9 tracker organ, created by landmark American organ builder John Brombaugh. This mechanical-action organ has 1,248 pipes, 19 stops and 29 ranks on two manual divisions and pedals.

“John Brombaugh’s historic Opus 9 Tracker Organ has found a wonderful new home in Schroeder Hall with its warm acoustical bloom,” said Dr. Charles Sepos, host of Curtain Call on KRCB FM.
