Kevin Damon Poole, son of Surry Poole and Jernice Poole-Smith, was a 1982 graduate of John F. Kennedy High School in Richmond.
While at Kennedy, he was involved in drama and sports. He attended the College of Alameda and the San Francisco School of Broadcasting in the field of Mass Communication.
On June 22, 1985, while fishing with friends, Kevin lost his life in an accidental drowning. To keep his memory alive and in honor of his interests, the Kevin Damon Poole Memorial Scholarship Fund was established.
In September 1985, the foundation held the first of what became 26 annual benefits, raising over $175,000 and awarding more than 140 Scholarships to high school graduates in the Bay Area.
Preference was given to students pursuing degrees in broadcasting or sports-related fields.
The scholarship foundation recently dissolved, and the remainder of its funds were presented to El Cerrito High School.
The high school has agreed to use the $10,000 donation to establish a perpetual scholarship in Kevin Poole’s memory. Family and friends of the board will continue to make annual donations to El Cerrito High School in Poole’s name, and the public is invited to make donations as well.
The foundation expresses thanks to its many supporters over the years, including the caterers, musicians, and visual artists who donated their talents, patrons who donated items for raffles and silent auctions, and attendees who showed up year after year to make this cause successful, as well as the Board of Directors who worked to bring the annual events together.
