OP-ED: “Color Me Stupid” – Thoughts on Smart Voting

I have watched with intense interest our national, state, and local politics. As Richmond prepares to vote for a new mayor and city council, a few things have stood out as insults to Richmond voters.

It seems that our local politicians believe that the voters are stupid. For instance, I don’t think our politicians believe we have been paying attention to the outrageous shenanigans of the past four years.

Color me stupid if I vote this year with a blind eye to the ridiculous manner our council has conducted city business the last four years. Color me stupid if African American politicians believe that being Black entitles you to Black people’s vote.

Color me stupid if African American politicians believe I believe that every political issue is a race issue. Color me stupid if African American politicians believe I have not paid attention to the hateful, intolerant, and divisive rhetoric unnecessarily infused into city business.

Color me stupid if any candidate thinks that having a multi-national corporation put your picture up all over town makes you a good candidate. Color me stupid if any politician think we do not know who’s investing in your candidacy, as well as why they are investing in your candidacy.

Color me stupid if white politicians believe that if a white person makes a statement, it is a truthful statement. Color me stupid if any of our local politicians don’t think we can vote smart.

Please color me stupid if anyone thinks that I don’t know that some of the issues presented by members of this outgoing council have been simply stupid.

Richmond community, let’s go to the polls and vote smart!
