MLK Day Events in the Bay Area


Scheduled events and days of service around the Bay Area honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday, Jan. 19:

Richmond: 9 a.m., 5th Annual MLK Day of Service at Richmond Greenway. Registration at 6th Street and Ohio Ave.



Oakland: 9 a.m., Day of Service at Oakland’s Life Academy of Health and Bioscience in response to killing of youth in the community. “Season of Peace Building” at noon. Life Academy, 2101 35th Ave. in Oakland;

10 a.m., MLK 23rd Annual Rally at ILWU Warehouse Union Hall, 99 Hegenberger in Oakland. Congresswoman Barbara Lee is scheduled to attend;

10 a.m., Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service with Urban Releaf, the national green street demonstration and research project at 31st and Market Streets in West Oakland.


San Francisco: 9 a.m., MLK Celebration at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Third and Howard Streets in San Francisco. MLK march begins at 11 a.m. from the Freedom Train arrival at the San Francisco Caltrain station to the celebration;

9 a.m., The San Francisco Department of Public Works, Mayor Ed Lee and the African American Arts and Cultural Complex will work on several cleaning and greening projects throughout the city. Kickoff is at the African American Art & Culture Complex, 762 Fulton St. in San Francisco;

11 a.m., free admission at the Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD), 685 Mission St. in San Francisco;

7 p.m., Youth Speaks 18th Annual Bringing the Noise for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. celebration at Nourse Auditorium, 275 Hayes St. in San Francisco. Tickets:


Marin County: 11 a.m., Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. celebration sponsored by Grassroots Leadership Network of Marin and the Marin City Martin Luther King Jr. Coalition, at Manzanita Community Center, 630 Drake Ave. in Marin City.
