Community members are invited to celebrate reading by taking part in the 2015 San Leandro Big Read, the largest reading program in the U.S. that brings together partners from across the country to encourage reading for pleasure and enlightenment.
This year’s Big Read will kick off on Saturday, Feb. 28 at 2 p.m. at the San Leandro Main Library at 300 Estudillo Ave., with an event that will allow participants to have fun, learn about what’s in store for the 2015 program, and register for a book discussion group.
All registrants will receive a free copy of the selected book while supplies last.
“We are tremendously grateful to the organizations that sponsor the Big Read,” noted Mayor Pauline Cutter. “The program promotes reading and literacy, fosters a broader understanding of the rich and diverse traditions of the people of San Leandro, and brings our community together for numerous fascinating artistic and cultural programs.”
The 2015 book selection is “Into the Beautiful North,” a novel by Luis Alberto Urrea, who has written numerous works in various genres, including fiction, nonfiction, and poetry.
He has been recognized for his writing through an induction into the Latino Literature Hall of Fame and as a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for his non-fiction book “The Devil’s Highway.”
The 2015 Big Read will continue through the months of March and April and will feature many programs and book discussions, including a literary gathering with the author, a panel discussion, movie showing, and a field trip to the Oakland Museum.
