A memorial fund has been set up to help pay funeral costs and support the children of 30-year old Chyemil Pierce, a mother who was killed this week in Oakland as she tried to shield her two young children from gunfire near their home.

The shooting happened Monday around 4:45 p.m. after a dispute between two groups of women on Chestnut Street. Men soon joined the fight before it escalated and shots were fired between the two sides, according to reports.

Close to where Pierce and her children were walking to their home, she rushed to get them to safety before she was hit. Pierce’s children, a 7-year-old son and 9-year-old daughter, were not hurt and her 1-year-old infant was not with her at the time.

Anthony Sims, 19, was charged Thursday in Pierce’s murder. Sims admitted to being involved in the gun battle and was arrested Tuesday at Highland Hospital, where he was admitted for wounds suffered in the shooting.

A celebration of Pierce’s life will be held on Saturday, March 14 at 2 p.m. at Frank Ogawa Plaza on 14th and Broadway in Oakland. There will be spoken word and performances from Bay Area artists.

“This is a time to come together as a community,” said Pierce’s sister.

Donations to the Chyemil Pierce Memorial Fund can be made at any Wells Fargo Bank, account no. 2923997700. Donations can also be made online at www.vincentacademy.org, the site for a charter elementary school where Pierce’s two oldest children were enrolled.
