As part of San Leandro’s 2015 Big Read Program, the Public Library is offering a field trip to two Bay Area Museums: The Oakland Museum of California and The Mexican Museum of San Francisco.

The tours will take place on Saturday, March 28 from 9:45 a.m.to 4:30 p.m. The museums are showcasing the influence of Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros and Jose Clemente Orozco on the American art scene from 1930-1990.
The Oakland Museum’s “Fertile Ground: Art and Community in California” focuses on local histories and social forces that changed the face of art in and beyond California from 1930 to 1990.
The exhibition weaves together the collections of SF MOMA and the Oakland Museum of California.
The exhibit focus is on the artworks, and the stories of the circle of artists who worked with, influenced, and were influenced by Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo in San Francisco in the 1930s; the legendary painters and photographers associated with the California School of Fine Arts in the 1940s and 1950s; the free-spirited faculty and students at UC Davis in the 1960s and 1970s; and the streetwise artists at the center of a vibrant new Mission scene that took root in the 1990s.
“San Francisco’s Maestros: Twentieth Century Mexican Masters” includes over 40 paintings, works on paper and sculpture, as well as rare books and other related works, representing 30 internationally-known artists. Beginning with Los Tres Grandes, the exhibition pays tribute to the three most influential Mexican artists of the 20th century: Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros, and Jose Clemente Orozco.
These artists influenced other painters of their time all over the world. They created muralist traditions that would deeply influence public art for decades to come by providing the basic styles and techniques of creating murals.
Participants also will have the opportunity to participate in a hands-on art experience offered by a San Francisco artist at the Mexican Museum of San Francisco.
Registration for the tour is available at the Main Library Information Desk at 300 Estudillo Ave in downtown San Leandro.
The bus will leave from the Main Library. The cost for the fieldtrip is $20, which includes transportation, museum admissions, tour fees and the optional art project.
The field trip is limited to 40 participants on a first come, first served basis.
