San Francisco, CA – The Giants gave out another award tonight. Casey McGehee received the National League Comeback Player of the Year Award before the first pitch. McGehee was honored for a solid season with the Marlins last year before after playing in Japan. It was a perfect night for the Giants to shut out his former team 6-0.
“It was a good reminder that I’ve been through adversity before and I’ve come out of it,” said McGehee. “I didn’t come out of it by pouting or feeling sorry for yourself or anything.”
“This will be a great reminder of the tough road he’s had to go down to get where he’s at,” said Giants manager Bruce Bochy pre-game. “It’s a nice thing that he’s receiving this at this time because he’s taking his struggles harder than anybody.”
McGehee was back in the lineup at third base for the first time in four games. Matt Duffy has started in his place for the last three games. The Giants got the offensive boost they needed in the second when McGehee hit a grand slam. Iy was his third career grand slam and first since April 26th, 2010.
“It was an important at-bat for me,” he explained. “I’ve hit balls hard at guys. It was just nice to get a big hit. I’m starting to slowly but surely feel like myself.”
Tim Lincecum was outstanding on the mound. He tossed six shutout innings and has now thrown 15-scoreless innings dating back to April 27th. Lincecum allowed three hits, three walks and struck out eight. He got himself into a few jams but escaped unscathed.
The fifth frame Lincecum loaded the bases after a few of his pitches were up to high. Adeiny Hechavarria led off the inning with a single follow by two free passes to Donovan Solano and Martin Prado. Lincecum struck out Giancarlo Stanton who represented the tying run) to end the inning.
“I’ve been fortunate to have the defense play well behind me,” Lincecum said. “I try to ride whatever’s going on right now.”
The Giants caught a break against reliever Brad Hand in the fifth. Buster Posey walked to start the frame, Brandon Belt singled and Justin Maxwell’s RBI scored in Posey making it a 5-0 game. By the seventh they added their insurance run.
Pitcher Nick Masset put two on before Maxwell’s second RBI of the night to extend the Giants lead 6-0. Brandon Crawford was hit by a pitch to load the bases and McGehee who was off to a great start hit into his second double play of the night to end the inning. Brandon Belt went 4-for-5 while Posey got on base with each at-bat.
The Marlins went 0-for-7 and was shutout for the third time this season. After recording a season-high 17 hits last night, they only moved four runners into scoring position. Miami was not as successful against a dominant Giants defense tonight. Two outstanding catches from Angel Pagan and Nori Aoki in the outfield.
“We had a good homestand despite two blowout losses,” said Bochy. “
