Carquinez Cemetery, Vallejo’s oldest cemetery dating back to 1857 located on Benicia Road near Rollingwood Avenue, recently benefited from the leadership efforts of Eagle Scout Elijah Cunningham.
On Saturday, May 2, approximately 40 volunteers, organized by Elijah as part of his Eagle Scout project, met at the historic cemetery and spent over three hours cleaning and documenting 200 head-stones.
The Public Works Department approved the project, and Carl Cade of the department’s Grounds Division joined the effort to lighten and brighten the head-stones. The volunteers filled up the City’s flatbed with debris for the landfill and set aside a large quantity of brush and limbs for mulching.
Vallejo City Councilmember Bob Sampayan signed as beneficiary of the work on the City’s behalf, and Lisa Spearman, Real Property Asset Manager with the Economic Development Division, worked with Elijah to coordinate the cleanup.
The City of Vallejo is grateful for the restoration performed by Elijah and his volunteers.
