Businessmen plan tailgate party for Vallejo Admirals

The Vallejo Admirals baseball team doesn’t have a working ice machine. In the hot days of summer an ice-cold drink and baseball go hand-in-hand.

A group of businessmen will host a fundraising party to help fix the problem.

The “tail-gate” party is scheduled from 2 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 20, at The Relay, 1035 Maine St., in Vallejo, which is just across Solano Avenue from Wilson Park where the Admirals will play the Sonoma Stompers at 5 p.m. that day.

“We asked the Admirals what would they like the proceeds to go toward and they said an ice machine,” organizer Curtis Lafferty said. “The ice machine that they have is broken and they really need it now, so we have already ordered the ice machine and it should be in (soon).”

This is the second tailgate party Lafferty, a real estate broker with Century 21 Schutjer Realty, Inc., Cam Vigil of Vigil Mechanical, Inc., law clerk Michael B. Pendergast of Morton & Russo, LLP and Moe Grigg of Ashorn Construction, Inc. and The Relay, has produced.

“We’re just a few businessmen who are excited to have a professional baseball team in Vallejo and want to do what we can to keep them here,” Lafferty said.

The ice machine costs about $2,500, and will reside at the Admirals’ concession stand at Wilson Park, he said.

Food, which includes hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, dessert, water and one free domestic beer at the game, stops being served at 4 p.m., organizers said.

The event will also feature music, a full bar inside The Relay, a beer bar, a 50/50 raffle, an Admirals merchandise booth and the possibility of meeting some of the team members.

The $10 wristband, which allows entry to the party with food and the game, is available (cash only) at The Relay or by calling any of the sponsors.

About 250 people attended last year’s tailgate event and Lafferty said organizers are planning for twice that many this year.

“Last year’s event sold out, so don’t wait to purchase your wristband for this year’s event,” he said.
